SPES BONA GIRL STUDENTS' RESIDENCE |
|
History Spes Bona Girls Residence was founded in 1910 as the result of a meeting in the Cape Town City Hall
of residents who realised the need to provide a home for girls coming from other parts of the country to study in Cape Town.
A Committee of Ladies under the Chairmanship of Mrs. John X Merriman was formed, and with the generous help of a number
of friends, a Residence was opened with ten students.
Founder: Mrs Agnes Merriman - 1910 Second founder: Mrs Cleone McMillan - 1983
In 1913 a Company was established, which raised enough money to
purchase grounds in the Gardens, and here the present Residence was built to house 58 students in 1915. The architect's original drawing in 1915.
