Introduction

The Residence is approved by the Education Department and the University of Cape Town as a Residence for students during their tertiary education, and is run as a non-profit making organisation.

The Residence is run by a Management Committee, members of which undertake this work voluntarily. Students are not accepted for periods of less than one year. However, subject to availability of space, short courses may be accommodated. All applications are submitted to the Selection Sub-Committee of the Management Committee.

Continuity is a feature of the students, many of whom are daughters or granddaughters of previous students. The aim of the Management Committee is to create a happy atmosphere for girls away from their homes.

Spes Bona is in the charge of the resident Lady Warden and the Assistanct Lady Warden, who also acts as the Secretary. Six of the students are elected by their fellows to form a House Committee, which, under the direction of the Lady Warden, is responsible for discipline in the Residence.

There is 24 hour security. The Residence is closed during the winter and summer holidays.
