A Home Away from Home …
Spes Bona is a residence for female students, conveniently located in the Gardens area of Cape Town, allowing for easy access to UCT and several colleges in the area.
Living at Spes Bona
We aim to provide a ‘home from home’ for female students, to create a warm and secure environment.
The residence has 2 TV lounges with DSTV, a common room with a piano, a dining room, a coffee bar and an extensive landscaped garden.
There are numerous places where students can relax and socialize, including a verandah with a picturesque view of Lions’ Head.
The residence has single and double bedrooms, which are furnished simply. Students provide their own bedding. The rooms are fitted with LED lights, heating panels and book shelves. First year students share bedrooms, and the single bedrooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, based on seniority.
Spes is renowned for its hearty home-cooked food, and catering is provided by two experienced cooks.
We do not cater for special dietary needs, except if prescribed by a medical doctor. Boarding is on a full board, and lunches are provided.
We realize that the personal safety and security of young female residents is of tantamount importance to parents. Spes has electrified fencing, CCTV, a front gate intercom, 24-hour guarding and 24-hour access control as each resident accesses the premises using an electronic access tag.
In addition, we are part of the Oranjekloof CID, we regularly consult with our security company to update our security system, and parking in a lighted area is available on site.
Computers and Internet access
Spes has a state-of-the-art uncapped WiFi system to which all students have access.
In addition, there is a computer room with 2 computers and printers for use by the students.
A ‘home from home’ for female students
There is ample street parking surrounding the residence.
In addition, there are a limited number of secure off-street parking bays available at R3300 per annum, allocated, subject to availability, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Application for parking is made at the time of application for residence.
Cleaning and laundry
Spes provides for the washing and ironing of bedding as a service inclusive in the residency fees.
Personal laundry is the responsibility of each student. There are coin-operated top loader washing machines and tumble dryers on the premises.
Laundry fees are R15 per wash and R15 per dry.
We believe it is our responsibility to create an awareness amongst our students of sustainability and looking after our planet for future generations. Accordingly we have embarked on a greening process: we have converted our bathrooms using solar energy and waterwise showerheads, and we have converted our light fittings to LEDs.
We recycle our waste. We create an awareness amongst students of how much water and energy we consume on a monthly basis. In addition, we are investigating converting some or all of our lighting needs, Internet and alarm services to solar energy.
Where we are
We are situated at 44 Hof Street, Gardens, opposite the Mediclinic hospital. We are conveniently situated close to major transport nodes, including the MyCiTi bus route and Jammie shuttle.
